Rachel's Challenge Message of Compassion Coming to SMCA
We have an amazing program scheduled for Thursday, September 23 at St. Michael’s. Rachel’s Challenge is an organization created by the family of Columbine shooting victim Rachel Scott, who touched the lives of dozens of students at that high school through her compassion and concern for students who were marginalized, alienated, or mistreated by others. There is an all-school assembly in the morning, a training session for students interested in continuing the program throughout the school year, and then an evening presentation for parents and the community at large.

There will be an informal reception from 6:30 - 7pm, and the presentation will be in the Gloria Delgado Performing Arts Center from 7-8pm. Please email Mr. Shakespeare with any questions you may have. Crusader Football broadcast live over Relevant Radio 970am

Ongoing Service Opportunities
We offer weekly service outing as a way for students to earn their service hours. All students are welcome to attend. This is a great way to spend time doing service and reflecting on service with other SMCA students. Mrs. Rodenborn or other SMCA faculty and staff members will be accompanying and driving students using SMCA transportation to and from the service outings.
Service outings are offered the first three Wednesdays of the month and the fourth Saturday of the month. On the first Wednesday of the month, we go to Catholic Charities. Here, we usually assist in the food pantry or with other tasks that are needed. We return from this trip by 6:45 PM. The second Wednesday of the month, we go to Mobile Loaves and Fishes. Here, students are the make-ready team for three trucks that will go out in the evening to deliver food to those in need. We return from this trip by 6:15 PM. On the third Wednesday of the month, our outing is to the Catholic Worker House. Catholic Worker House provides medically supportive housing for homeless adults with critical or terminal illness. On the fourth Saturday of the month, we will alternate between Any Baby Can, where students will help tutor in the Saturday Learning Center, or other places to be determined each month.
For the Wednesday outings, students earn 2.5 hours of service that go towards the “option for the poor." The number of hours earned on the Saturday outings will be determined each month according to the project. Each service outing requires a separate permission slip available here on the website and each week outside the campus ministry office. Students need to turn in the permission slip to Mrs. Rodenborn to be included on the trip. The trips are limited to a maximum of 13 students - the first 13 to turn in their permission slip may attend. Permission slips have to be received by lunch on Wednesday afternoon (for Wednesday outing) or by lunch on Friday (for Saturday outing) for a student to be able to attend.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Rodenborn at trodenborn@smca.com.
